A hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive keyhole surgery used to diagnose and treat conditions inside the hip joint. It is commonly performed for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, cartilage damage, and to remove loose fragments or inflamed tissue.

Although smaller incisions are used compared to major hip surgery, recovery can still take several months — and without the right rehabilitation, many patients are left with stiffness, weakness, or difficulty walking.

What is a Hip Fracture?

Hip arthroscopy involves inserting a tiny camera (arthroscope) and specialist instruments into the hip joint through small incisions. The surgeon can:

Reshape bone in FAI surgery (femoroacetabular impingement).
Repair or trim the labrum (labral tear).
Smooth or repair cartilage (chondroplasty).
Remove loose fragments inside the joint.
Reduce inflammation by removing damaged tissue.

It is usually performed as a day case procedure, with most patients discharged the same day. Despite being “minimally invasive,” structured rehabilitation is still essential for a full recovery.

FAQs About Hip Arthroscopy Recovery

How long will I need crutches after hip arthroscopy?

Usually 1–2 weeks, but this depends on your procedure and surgeon’s instructions.

When can I drive after hip arthroscopy?

Often around 2–4 weeks, once you can walk comfortably and safely control the pedals.

When can I go back to work?

Desk-based work is usually possible after 2–3 weeks, while more physical jobs may take 6–12 weeks.

Is hip arthroscopy recovery quicker than hip replacement?

Yes, but you still need physiotherapy to restore hip function and avoid long-term stiffness or weakness.

When can I return to sport?

Low-impact sport may be possible after 3 months, while running and competitive sport are often closer to 4–6 months.

I have seen many physios over the years who gave me the wrong treatments and no faith in them and let me down and becoming hopeless. I was lucky to find Post Op Home Physio, the process was very easy especially having home visits and saving on fares I got good information from MARK who set everything up for me. And was very surprised and happy that THEO arrived who is very knowledgeable and at last felt that I was listened to and felt in safe hands. I just wished I would have seen him sooner. Hip and Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation I had a hip replacement in June 2023 and subsequently suffered a spinal stroke in January 2024 as a result of severe cervical spine cord compression and underwent a major cervical spine laminectomy involving posterior cervical fixation from C2 to T2. In layman terms, my legs were effectively paralysed, and I had a complete loss of independence. I could not walk, leave the home or do anything independently without support. For someone who has always been very independent this was a very challenging time for me, both physically and mentally. Julia Unsworth was part of my physio team  for my recovery journey and from the outset, I was very impressed by her caring approach and knowledge of physiotherapy. Julia worked collaboratively with other members of the team during my recovery journey after I was discharged from hospital in February 2024. As a result of her invaluable guidance and motivational support I am independent again today and able to do everything I took for granted prior to suffering the spinal stroke. I cannot thank Julia enough for working so closely with me and other members of my medical team to restore my mobility and independence. I would have no hesitation in recommending Julia. After surgery to pin my femur back together, I was in pain with very limited mobility, so I chose PostOp Home Physio precisely because of their focus on recovering from surgery at home. Felicitas was brilliant - thoughtful, caring, focused, tailoring the programme to my individual needs with clear goals in view, which she adjusted from session to session depending on progress. She always explained clearly what she was doing and why, and what I should be aiming for. Result: two months after the accident I am almost back to normal. Following a total knee replacement, I was looking for a home visit physio given expected limited mobility post op rather than having to travel somewhere. Mark at Post Op Home Physio initially came 2x weekly (and later once a week) and provided me with an exercise programme, a great app with video explanations of the exercises, and balanced this with massage, manipulation and advice, all in the comfort of my own home. It was very helpful Mark could share his experience of recovery of other knee replacement patients and also could provide a physiolab icemachine at a very competitive price. I’m sure my recovery would have been a lot slower without Mark’s help. I would highly recommend Mark and Post Op Home Physio to anybody seeking to recover post op or from an injury.

Julia Unsworth took care of me through my rehabilitation over the next few months, initially visiting twice a week to help me through that really tough initial phase.  My outcomes were really good - in terms of recovery, flexion/straightening and gradual strength/stability.  Julia constantly evolved the rehab exercises that I had to complete between visits and this helped accelerate my recovery.  Six months on I have pretty much begun full training again undertaking HIIT classes at F45. Highly recommended due to specific knowledge and experience of this type of rehabilitation. Having had a great experience with Mark and Netta following a knee replacement in 2023, Post Op Home Physio was the obvious choice following a bad fall, initially disabling my right leg. Ben did not disappoint. His care and attention paid off and got me up and mobile again much quicker than I had thought possible.

 Verified I had a partial knee replacement in October and my specialist recommended Post Op Physio. From the start, they were so efficient and helpdul. Aaron was my physiotherapist and he came to my home each week for 10 sessions. I can honestly say, I have never had such a great physio (and I have had many over the years). Aaron managed to get my knee bending - slowly at first, but by gentle manipulation, Aaron helped me bend it to just over 120 degrees. I also had an app on my phone which Aaron updated weekly for me so I could have a programme to do at home. I also thought it was great when Aaron was on annual leave, Mark came in his place to ensure I didn't miss my session. I would have no hesitation in recommending both Post Op Physio and Aaron as I have had a great experience as well as great results for my rehabilitation.

 Verified After being completely non weight bearing for 12 weeks Post Op Home Physio were quite literally my first step into recovery. Aaron was my therapist and from the outset he was very accommodating. It was very easy to get an initial meeting, after explaining my injury/surger Aaron came to see me within a few days of making contact. His mobilisation massage was incredible and helped me get movement and flexibility back into my foot as quickly as possible. Aaron gave me a simple programme that he updated every week when we had our session as I got stronger and more able to complete the exercises. He also put me in contact with a great Hydrotherapy team, which I would strongly recommend as a supplement to any physio programme. Importantly, Aaron was very attentive to my needs and removed exercises from my programme that were too challenging for me or overly painful. After about 15 sessions Aaron felt that he had taken me on my journey about as far as he could and recommended a more advanced sports physio for me to attend which I am continuing with. The Therapist is patient, kind and fully engaged with getting her back to independent walking. The whole experience with this company is outstanding they do an initial assessment to establish the needs of each client and then set out a personal plan to suit those needs.
